UPCOMING 40HZ EVENTS

It’s without a doubt that residing in a suburb of London, England had a major effect on J:Kenzo growing up. Little did he know that a mere 7 years after he was first exposed to the bass music sub genre of dubstep that he would be championing the sound to such a degree. J:Kenzo is one of the highest in demand dj’s, and one of the busiest producers in bass music. Early in the game he caught the ear of Argon Records’ main squeeze Nick Argon, only shortly after to be gripped by Youngsta and denounced as the ‘one to watch’. Since then the whole world has been watching. On Saturday May 26th J:Kenzo makes his debut appearance in Toronto on the full 40hz rig.

Since 2009’s release of, “City Limits Volume 1,” Silkie has been a staple in representing the soulful and steamy side of bass music. What few don’t know is that his releases date back to 2002, when he was only 16 years old. Fast forward to 2011, when “City Limits Volume 2,” dropped on Mala’s, Deep Medi label. “Volume 2,” was an unthinkable collection of originals and collaborations that showcased Silkie as an even more mature producer that had fallen deep into the holds of music theory and classic melodies. Paired with a tight and defined rhythm section, chiseled bass and drenched in soul, Silkie’s music tends to touch more people than not. His return to Toronto this coming April will have Silkie performing an extended 2 hour dj and live set on keys, sampler and laptop. Show some love for the man that keeps the music in our bass.

40hz Presents: Youngsta (Rinse.fm)

Few can say that they have been there from the beginning and even fewer can say that they’ve maintained full integrity the whole time. Staying true to the deep and dark dungeon sound, Youngsta is a definitive selector when quality is inhigh demand. Recently nominated and running away with the acclaims of “Best Radio Show” and “Best DJ” in the 2012 DubstepForum Awards, Youngsta’s reputation is one that demands respect in ways that most dj’s can only hope to attain one day. His show on Rinse.Fm is in many ways one of the most vital weekly broadcasts to still represent the original sound. 40hz will be on soundsystem duties and Youngsta will be in full control.

40hz presents: Mala (Deep Medi, DMZ)

If there is one name in dubstep that doesn't need an explanation it's Mala. His name is synonymous with the foundation dubstep movement of the mid 2000's, and his label - Deep Medi Musik is one of the most respected bass music imprints in the world. Mala is also known as one half of the production duo Digital Mystikz (with his long time friend Coki). In his productions you can find a fusion of many elements, with each record having it's own diversity of textures while still managing to retain a signature sound throughout. 40hz Soundsystem is delighted to welcome Mala to Toronto in 2012 and we want you to be there to supply a warm welcome.

40hz Soundsystem Pres. Mungo's Hifi (Scotland) (Scotch Bonnet)

On Saturday October 1, 40hz Soundsystem is absolutely ecstatic to present one of the best reggae sound system's in the world, Mungo's Hifi. Rocking since 2001, Mungo's has consistently raised the bar when it comes to dance floor decimation, with definite help from a custom, hand-made sound system. With a forthcoming album entitled "Forward Ever" ready to drop in October on their own label Scotch Bonnet, they leave nothing for the imagination as they showcase their signature roots and dub sound. Enter into the arena and 'fire it up' as we nestle into Toronto's premiere 'smoke friendly' Zion Lounge.

This night will also feature one of Toronto's wizards of new school bass, XI. After sharpening his production skills 100x over in the last few years, and having a complete disregard for anything conventional, XI has continued to do his own thing. A recent release on Scuba's dignified Hotflush Recordings has confirmed XI as part of a small group of forward thinking producers that will take bass music to places currently uncharted.

MAD PROFESSOR:

A disciple of Lee “Scratch” Perry, Mad Professor was one of the leading producers in dub reggae’s second generation. His Dub Me Crazy albums helped dub make the transition into the digital age, when electronic productions started to take over mainstream reggae in the ’80s. His space-age tracks not only made use of new digital technology, but often expanded dub’s sonic blueprint, adding more elements and layers of sound than his forebears typically did. In the mid-’90s, he returned to the basics, debuting a more retro-sounding style on the Black Liberation Dub series. Additionally, he ran his own studio and label, Ariwa, which was home to a stable of vocalists (with an emphasis on lovers rock and conscious roots reggae) and some of the finest British reggae productions of the era. As his reputation grew, he became a remixer of choice for adventurous rock and techno acts, most notably revamping Massive Attack’s entire second album under the new title No Protection.

Equally renowned for producing deep roots reggae, trance-inducing dub and bitter sweet lover’s rock, the Mad Professor’s Ariwa Sounds stable is a veritable institution of British reggae.


TWILIGHT CIRCUS:

Twilight Circus is the acclaimed project of Canadian musician Ryan Moore. With 19 full-length albums and 20 vinyl singles released since 1995, Ryan Moore/Twilight Circus has received international recognition as one of the top producers in reggae and dub active today.

Spanning dub, reggae, electronic & even indie influences - featured guests on the recordings include Sly & Robbie, Luciano, Michael Rose (Black Uhuru), Big Youth, Gregory Isaacs, Sugar Minott, Queen Ifrica, Lutan Fyah, Style Scott (Roots Radics) & Dean Fraser. Twilight Circus has played 100's of live dates around the World with shows in the USA, Europe, UK, Canada, Asia, Middle East, Central & South America.


HOUSE OF DAVID GANG:

House of David Gang is one of Canada's busiest touring reggae bands. Rooted in the timeless tradition of Jamaican roots reggae from the 70s and early 80s as embodied by the immortal Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer; House of David Gang adds a potent mix of jazz, funk and afrobeat to create a true global reggae orchestra.

CHOCOLATE & PATRICK ROOTS:

Reggae veterans DJ Chocolate and DJ Patrick Roots have been working the decks together since 2004, and their magical, rhythmic sets sound like they’ve been mixing together for much longer. Patrick’s been a major force at the U of T radio station for over 20 years, and Chocolate first stepped up to the decks and radio mic in 1994 and went on to start Toronto’s all-women DJ collective Chicks Dig It, open the first woman-owned vinyl mastering and recording studio Scratch Free and manage artists including the Dream Band and Kidd Rasta & The Peacemakers for her own company, Natty Posse Entertainment.

Get ready to sway your hips with a smile on your lips with these two on the decks!


ZUM ONE:

Deeply addicted to bass, Zum One has developed his artistic lexicon through participation in the tribal dance community. A rooted connection to the Earth has been another focus and inspiration to all his artistic projects. This is especially interesting, as Zum One is a digital artist, thus this deep ecological connection creates and interesting fusion between the organic and the electronic.

We’re excited to see what he pulls out of the crates for this DUB TIME set!
